This Life
The night recedes and, with our dreams, forgotten memories and fears
evaporate like morning mist upon a lake.
The rising sun sends out her rays across the waking world,
inviting us to greet the day, opening our tender hearts like flowers ….
like flowers …
Today my tears came tumbling down
my breaking heart, for you are gone
It’s all too much, it’s all too raw right now
They might say you threw it away
you lived your life in vain
but you fought to keep the show on the road
the whole shebang, the circus ride
you couldn’t go around again …. and again
The day is young, the air is sweet
This life force pulls me to my feet
I feel connected to the vastness of the biosphere
I am a bird, I am a bee
the earth I walk upon is me
and I’m vibrating with the music of the universe
I’m in the air … the trees … the earth
I’m feeling so plugged in, connected to the core
a sweet belonging and a deep desire for more
I’m digging deeper still, to find the root of all
that we ever were or will be in a realm of no recall
I see your face in the morning light
Your spirit left us under cover of the night
There was no way that I could know I’d never get to say
“I love you” one more time, be with you just one more day
The fabric of our life is torn away …. away
Are we apart, or are we a part
of something merging, re-emerging into light?
Do our spirits long to be free?
Is all we touch and all that we see
ephemeral, impermanent?
I wonder how insignificant are we… ?
… there is no “we”
… there is no “me” …
May those who are dying gain strength from our love …
May those who are living gain strength from our love …

Quest
And is it true, that to come to you
I must be prepared to travel through
deepest dark, deepest dark?
Leave the sun, the light, the air
like Persephone, do I have to take the path
to the Underworld, the Underworld?
There, down the steps, down beneath my feet
because there is no other way
must I descend? Must I descend?
I have a vision of your face
to illuminate my way and give me grace
The walls are layered, red and gold
I must go deep … deeper still

The Lives of Others
I have no idea where this will end
Houses crashing to the ground and all you see is red
Life will go on in some shape or form
but not for many in the belly of the storm.
You can say it’s always been this way
He who has the biggest army gets the final say
He will hold sway – and all we do is pray
and watch the lives of others being swept away.
Gathering above us angry drones
Used to be the snipers kept the people in their homes
Waiting for the Bomb, Death as stelliform
and the man behind it is increasingly alone.
Is our genus selfish to the core?
We leave a trail of devastation, terror, rape and gore
The Earth and all her inhabitants will fall
If we don’t wake up, there will be nothing left at all.

Ronin ... Afterword

Afterword
On the silent morning, after the storm
We bring our weapons; we come to lay them down
All of us are yearning for some kind of peace
For release, for release
The land around us is derelict and dead
Collateral damage in our hearts …
A single note of birdsong hangs in the air
And all of life is there …
Prayers for the children, who were born into a world of war
None of the adults could explain what all of it was for
What any of the genocide was for
Crimes of omission eat at the heart
The things we thought we could have done
But all we’re left with is the here and now
The here and now is all the time we have
Will those who judge us understand our crimes
when we barely understand ourselves?
Every parent yearns to see their child grow up and live, grow up and live
Prayers for the children born into peace
None of the adults is able to explain
How to be as one, in harmony,
The balance of maintaining some self-doubt

Alternative Communication Perth, UK
Alternative Communication is based in Perthshire,
Scotland.
We began in 1980 at University as
friends with
common musical interests. We composed our
own music, self-releasing 3 albums until the group disbanded in 1985.
David A. Reid (solo artist) and Brian and Janette Kidd (Not for Pussies) continued to
compose and record until, in 2019, they reconvened.
