Some things are out of reach in an absolute way, but this piece is a story about things that appear to be out of reach, but only in relation to the effort being made to reach them. The first half of the piece oscillates between harsher and then more mellow sounds. Suffering followed by a half-hearted attempt at a solution, only for the suffering to return. Eventually the piece opens up into a longer section of joy and freedom; a glimpse of what could be achieved if only….
In the final section, all the old themes return, running together to a sudden stop. The ambiguous ending leaves a question. Maybe the right amount of effort will be made, just before it’s too late. [DR]
