about
The song describes a dangerous and unpredictable world: A world of climate change, pandemics and "post-truth". We really were "hiding on a hill" while this was being composed. The lyrics contain references not only to a dangerously divisive President, but to an earlier time and place, Azusa Street, which was key to the birth of the Pentecostal movement and an important chapter in African American history and human rights. Throw this mix into the heat of present day fires, literally consuming towns, the inferno of anti-science beliefs and extreme religious fundamentalism, consuming some parts of the country, and it is a bleak picture. So, it felt important to end with the Sanskrit chants, bringing peace and a grounding sense of calm.
Having chosen this as our first "single" and video, and trying to align the release with the 2021 US Elections, we did the final production/mixing "virtually" for the first time. David did the honours in his studio and, courtesy of the internet, the piece was gradually moulded into its current form.
lyrics
World on Fire
Hiding on the hill, away from everyone
She’s a fugitive, a refugee, a woman on the run.
Gratefully aware of life, she savours every breath
but precious air has now become the harbinger of death.
Signs & Symptoms – we’re all on high alert
Collective hyperthermia goes viral on the net
Signs & Wonders - the faithful go to town
Prophetic proclamations that end times are going down
He’s walking down Azusa Street, the buildings are on fire
The genomes only say so much and the President’s a liar
Signs & Symptoms – How to navigate the storm
You all can keep your distance – this is THE new social norm
Signs & Wonders – Infectious ecstasy
There is no vaccination and no herd immunity – and no Eternity
[Coda – Sanskrit chants]
Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Say So Hung (Sun, Moon, Earth, Infinity, All that is Infinity, I am Thee.)
Sat Nam (Truth is My Name. ”Sat” must be at least 8 beats longer than the “Nam”)
