about

This was the second track we wrote together in the same room, in early 2020. It was our last track before Lockdown happened and was finished off remotely.

It begins with one of David's riffs - and a real tension builds with Janette's discordant choir, only to resolve into a sweet chord sequence as the lyrics begin. They started life a good 20 years earlier in one of Janette's poems, but, as often happens, the images seemed to fit the melody and atmosphere. Touching on transience, rebirth, eternity.. it can be seen as a simple love song, but contains so much more. The sweetness is tinged with darkness.

Parhelion introduced a broader sonic palette - involving keyboards and brass instruments. This opened the band up to using a wider instrumentation, when appropriate, in the rest of the songs on the album.

lyrics

Parhelion

Moth in a bell Jar, fluttering
come to life in a ray of sun ... Parhelion

And outside

snow petals on the window pane
I feel them melting on my tongue … on my tongue

The parts of you that never see
the sun are white as any subterranean ….

A precious stone that I will mine
and warm to life in my mouth ….

As I lay me down to sleep
in feathered wings my soul to keep
your glow around my ember heart
and breath to warm me into morning light
