about

Epheremides - a word play on the plural of Ephemeris (definitions - a means of calculating the position of a celestial object over time or something lasting only for a day). For us, it’s an expression of the frustration that solutions to the world’s problems can be identified but these solutions are much more difficult to grasp.

As we were approaching completion of the album during lock down, we all brought undeveloped ideas to the table. This piece from David was being lined up for a solo project – with his own 12-string guitar and a selection of MIDI synths and guitars already recorded. But once we heard it and saw its potential as an element of this album, it was taken over by the band.

To begin with, bass guitar and drums were the only additions to David’s demo recording. But then at around one and a half minutes, it was clear that evolution was required. The full Alternative Communication took off –staccato rhythm guitars are jumped by a series of discordant lead lines interweaving over the solid rhythm section. A bed of atmospherics (courtesy of Brian’s guitar synth) builds to the first climax. This in turn leads into a lyrical section where the bass holds the melody. David’s suggested lead guitar for the next section came as a surprise to Brian and Janette, so Janette promptly came back with an even more unexpected set of synthesizer runs all of which build the piece up to its main climax. Mellotrons carry the theme (almost) home but there’s still time for a frantic drum’n’bass conclusion.
