about

Dark matter is composed of particles that do not absorb, reflect, or emit light. So it cannot be seen directly. We know that dark matter exists only because of the effect it has on objects that we can observe directly.

Another instrumental from David’s files was considered for the album. In this case two distinct elements had been sketched out – an atmospheric, swaying piece on synthesizers and MIDI strings (cellos) and a pair of piano-riff based segments. These were all imported into Brian’s Protools system and he went about adding an introduction using sequencers and atmospherics (reverse guitars and e-bows) that segued into David's rich textures. The resulting dark holding space was then led into the first of the piano riffs by newly recorded bass and drum lines. This builds with new “live” guitars mixing in with the dense MIDI instruments until a first climax is achieved – underpinned by Janette’s use of a bass Gizmotron and a virtual Mellotron pedal. [This also evokes the 1980s - Janette owned an original Gizmo and used it on an early Alternative Communication recording]. The resulting tension is held until the second piano riff takes off, supported by lead and rhythm guitar lines and thrusting cellos. The music builds with the arrangement using added synthesizers - including the returning atmospheric strings from David's original opening. Finally two ecstatic lead guitar lines interweave to bring the piece to a climax. A closing bass solo over a reprise of the opening atmospherics brings the piece back down to earth.
